Ideal Protein - AntiOxy

The concept of antioxidants is associated to the notion of free radicals, residual particles of the metabolism that wander through the bloodstream and could at any moment promote degenerative diseases, cancers, etc.

To fight the toxic effects of free radicals created during oxidative stress, secondary to the harmful action of radiations, pollutants, refined foods, pesticides, tobacco usage, UV rays, medication, etc., there are protection systems: Either endogenous, especially of an enzymatic nature, or exogenous, like antioxidants, veritable destroyers of free radicals.

In the cells, the production regulation of free radical is controlled by the enzymatic systems. Current nourishment, poor in fruits and vegetables, is responsible for the degradation of the pre-existing balance between production of free radical and “endogenous antioxidants.” In fact, the increase of oxidative stress, a consequence of modern life, is responsible for increased radical toxicity; our body then needs a supplementary contribution of “endogenous antioxidants,” which is possible thanks to nourishment rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Nourishment rich in fruits and vegetables is by far the best source of antioxidants, but freshness is often absent, variety difficult to apply, without forgetting that most of the time, a multitude of alterations destroy the noble properties of fruits and vegetables.

Ingredients description

Green tea (leaf)
Green tea, also called virgin tea, contains a source of powerful antioxidants: polyphenols. Catechins are one of the polyphenol families and are 20 times more efficient than Vitamin E. It stimulates the detoxifying enzymes in the body, which allows the cells to get rid of free radicals and other harmful elements.

Alpha lipoic acid
ALA is endowed with notable antioxidant abilities since it has the benefit of being soluble in water (hydroslouble) and in fats (liposoluble), which allows it to neutralize many types of free radicals. It can parry the effects of free radicals in all parts of the cell membrane, both the hydrophilic and lipophilic regions as well as the hydrophilic cytosol inside the cell itself.

Additionally, as opposed to other antioxidants that have a specific task in the body, ALA can act as a free agent. In other words, if your level of Vitamin C or E is low, ALA will temporarily take over their functions.

Turmeric (root)
The importance of curcuma in therapy has greatly changed since the antioxidant properties of its phenolic compounds were discovered. Its rhizome is a rich source of these compounds known as curcuminoids, the main one being curcumin.

Bilberry (leaf and fruit)
Bilberries contain a variety of components at differing degrees depending on the species: antioxidants (anthocyanins), bacterial inhibitors (anthocyanosides), folic acid, ellagic acid, Vitamins A and C, carotenes and fibres. Bilberry leaves contain anthocyanins, one of its active ingredients, neo-myrtilline, is found to be very effective in the treatment of diabetes.

Certain studies suggest that chlorogenic acid, a substance found in bilberry leaf extract, inhibits the enzymatic action responsible for the production of glucose at the level of the liver and maybe its release into blood circulation (similar to the prescription drug metformin).

The bilberry fruit contains flavonoids (anthocyanins) and proanthocyanidols (O.P.C.) OPCs are water-soluble and rapidly absorbed by buccal mucosa and the gastro-intestinal tract. Lab experiments have shown that OPC’s rapidly fasten themselves on the cell membranes of the following systems: vascular, pulmonary, immune, bone, nerve, muscular, articular, tegumentary (skin) and connective tissues.

The properties are numerous: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, vena tonic, anti-caries(cavities), antihistaminic, anti-cancer, anti-aging, etc.

What is the substance that gives Bilberry its ability to improve sight? Its bioflavonoids, especially its anthocyanins (anthocyanidines). These act in two particular ways. They possess antioxidant properties and they are also able to stimulate the production of a substance called “rhodopsin” or visual purple. This substance is essential for night vision. It has also been shown that bilberry fruit contains substances able to inhibit the adhesion of colibacillus in the bladder and intestines.

Resveratrol (whole grape extract)
Grape skin contains the famous polyphenols including Resveratrol. This active ingredient is identified in over 72 families of plants, but it is mainly found in the skin of red grapes. It has properties that are similar to that of Ginkgo biloba.

Researchers from the Chicago Medical University have just found that Resveratrol has a similar molecular structure as that of synthetic estrogen. Would it be a kind of estrogen? In that case it is quite possible that the estrogenic properties of Resveratrol are in part responsible for its cardiovascular therapeutic properties. In reality it most likely functions as an adaptogen with respect to estrogen, that is it helps the body adapt to fluctuations in estrogen levels. The compound very likely has some weak estrogenic activity, thus if a person's estrogen levels are low, it may bind to estrogen receptors and illicit a response. The overall effect here is to bring the person's estrogenic functions closer to normal. On the other hand, if a person's estrogen levels are too high, this compound would "compete" with endogenous estrogens for binding sites, and because it has a weaker activity, the effect here would be to decrease estrogen expression. Again the overall effect is more of a normalization of estrogenic function.

Researchers of the Milan University have established that a chemical substance in grapes and wine triggers a seven-fold increase in the activity and effectiveness of an enzyme called mapkinase, which stimulates and regenerates nerve cells. This substance is called Resveratrol. They discovered that it allowed brain cells to grow small extensions through which they could communicate with neighboring cells. This is an important breakthrough for all neurodegenerative problems.

Recently, they discovered the synergetic effect of Resveratrol administered with anti-HIV drugs (i.e.: AZT), it increases 200 times their antiviral capacity.

  • It acts as an antagonist to dioxin, which previous studies showed could impair fertility by damaging the DNA of sperm and ovum.

Lycopene
About 600 carotenes exist in nature; Lycopene is the one found in the greatest quantity in the West, beta-carotene comes in second. It is also one of the main carotenoids found in human plasma.

Once Lycopene has passed through the blood, it is transported via the lymphatic system to the liver. It is then distributed to all the body’s tissues where it can fully play its role as an antioxidant. It also is sequestered in the lungs, prostate, testicles, colon, suprarenal glands and skin.

Lycopene is a powerful trapper of the oxygen radical responsible for oxidative stress. We know that this type of stress is associated to increased cancer risks.

As much as oxygen is essential for life, it also may cause countless annoyances: cars that rust, rubber that looses elasticity, slice of apple that turns brown.

Cellular respiration (when the human body transforms food and oxygen into energy) generates a large quantity of free radicals. Cigarettes, aging, stress, prolonged exposure to the sun, intense physical activity, etc. are all elements that contribute to the “overflow” of free radicals that in turn generate others.

Free radicals (very reactive ions) are substances that "steal" electrons from vital compounds or structures in our bodies. In chemistry this process is called oxidation (the loss of electrons) and the agent causing this to happen is termed an oxidizer. The structure or compound from which the electron was taken is now damaged. Thus a free radical is an oxidizing agent in 'chemical parlance' (something that causes oxidation). When the free radical steals an electron, it is said to be reduced, and it is now stable and does no further harm. Anitoxidants, on the other hand, are actually reducing agents. That is they give up an electron to neutralize (reduce) the free radical before it can damage our cells. Our wellbeing is greatly dependant on a constant supply of these important "free radical neutralizers" and we need a variety of them. Why? Some are only active in the "oily" parts of our bodies, these are the lipophilic antioxidants (like lycopene, and Vitamins A, E, and D for example). Others are active in the "watery parts," these are hydrophilic antioxidants (Vitamin C and OPCs among others). Others, like alpha lipoic acid, can be active in either environment.

Taking antioxidants is now acknowledged as the most effective means of countering free radicals, which in excess, accelerate cellular aging, cellular damage, and in the process, can create several disease states.

The body has its army of antioxidants, but its soldiers cannot complete the mission. As a result, the body’s resistance diminishes and disorders set in.

It would be well to remember that the 1st mandate of natural medicine is: PREVENTION
